Best Cafés & Breakfast Spots

If one habit defines daily life in Tirana, it is coffee. The city has an enormous number of cafés, they fill up several times a day, and sitting over a single cup for an hour is completely normal. As a guest, joining this rhythm is one of the easiest ways to feel part of the city rather than just passing through.

Why coffee matters here

Coffee in Tirana is social, not just a drink. People meet for coffee to talk business, catch up with friends, or simply pass time. It is normal to order one drink and stay a long while, and no waiter will hurry you out. A coffee is also cheap, so this is a pleasure you can enjoy several times a day without thinking about the cost.

What to order

A few words make ordering easy:

  • Makiato — a small espresso with a little warm milk; the local favourite
  • Kafe or espresso — a short, strong black coffee
  • Kapuçino — cappuccino, much as you would expect
  • Kafe turke — traditional unfiltered coffee, served with the grounds settled at the bottom
  • Frappe — cold, whipped iced coffee, popular through the summer

Filter or "American" coffee exists in larger cafés but is less common. Tea is available too, including herbal and mountain tea, and many cafés serve fresh juices and soft drinks for those skipping coffee.

Cafés through the day

Cafés have a rhythm. They open early, usually by 7 or 8am, and are quiet then, which is the best time for a calm start. They fill up mid-morning, empty around lunch, then fill again from late afternoon as people finish work. The same café can be peaceful at 8am and packed at 6pm, so choose your timing to match the mood you want.

Breakfast in Tirana

Breakfast here is usually light. Many locals start the day with just a coffee and a byrek, a warm flaky pastry filled with cheese, spinach or meat, bought from a bakery. You may also see petulla, small pieces of fried dough, eaten with cheese or honey. Cafés serve pastries, toast and eggs, and a growing number of places in Blloku do a fuller weekend brunch with larger plates.

Your apartment kitchen is also an easy option. Bakeries and small shops nearby sell fresh bread, eggs, yogurt, fruit and good local honey, so a simple home breakfast costs very little and saves time on a busy day.

Where to sit

Around Skanderbeg Square and along the main boulevard you will find large, busy cafés that are good for people-watching. The quieter streets of Blloku have smaller, more design-focused places, better for a calm coffee or for reading. Near the New Bazaar, cafés sit right beside the market, which makes a natural mid-morning stop while exploring. In summer, look for a shaded terrace; in cooler months, the indoor rooms fill quickly in the late afternoon.

Wi-Fi and a quiet hour

Most cafés have free Wi-Fi, and it is normal to sit with a laptop or a book for a while, especially outside the busy hours. If you need to catch up on messages or plan your day, a mid-morning café is a comfortable place to do it.

Order your coffee the way locals do: a makiato, sitting down, with no rush. Takeaway coffee exists but is far less common here. The point of the cup is the pause that comes with it, so give yourself the half hour.

What a coffee costs

Coffee is one of the cheapest pleasures in Tirana. A makiato or espresso costs only a small amount, far less than in most of Europe, so a few stops a day will barely move your budget. There is no need to tip in a café, though many people leave the small coins from their change. Prices are a little higher at the grand cafés on the main square and lower on the quiet side streets, but nowhere is expensive.

Most cafés take cards, but small ones may prefer cash, so keep a little on you. Many cafés also serve alcohol and light food all day, which means the same place can work for a morning coffee and an evening drink. For specific cafés near the apartment, see the Cafés page, and for the food side of mornings see What to Eat in Tirana.
