Airport to Apartment Guide

Tirana International Airport — officially "Nënë Tereza" and still called Rinas by locals — is the country's main airport and your likely arrival point. It sits outside the city, and the drive to the apartment usually takes around 30 to 40 minutes, though traffic can make it longer. This guide covers your options and how to make both arrival and departure smooth.

Your options at a glance

  • Taxi — easiest with luggage or late at night; door to door; the pricier choice. Confirm the fare first.
  • Airport bus — runs between the airport and the city centre at set times for a low fare; best if you travel light.
  • Private transfer — booked in advance, a driver waits with your name; most comfortable, especially for families or early flights.

By taxi

Taxis wait outside the arrivals hall. This is the simplest option, particularly with heavy bags or after a late flight. The airport run is one of the more expensive rides in the area, so agree the price before you set off, or ask for the meter. Ask your host for a current estimate so you know what is fair before you negotiate.

Travel time depends heavily on traffic. Outside rush hour the drive is straightforward; during the morning and evening peaks it can take noticeably longer, so allow extra time, especially for a departing flight.

By airport bus

An airport bus connects the airport with the city centre at regular times through the day for a small fare. It is a good budget choice if you are not carrying much luggage. From the central stop you would take a short taxi or walk to the apartment. Check the timetable for your arrival time, as buses do not run through the night.

Private transfer

A pre-booked transfer is the most relaxed option. A driver waits in arrivals with your name, helps with bags, and takes you straight to the door for a fixed price agreed in advance. It costs more than the bus but removes all guesswork, which is worth it for families, early flights or a first visit. Your host can help arrange one.

Arriving — a simple checklist

  1. Before you fly, send your host your flight number and arrival time.
  2. Save the apartment address on your phone, including offline, and have it ready to show the driver.
  3. Keep some euros or lek for the ride; there are ATMs and exchange desks in the arrivals area.
  4. Buy a local SIM or eSIM at the airport if you want data straight away, or simply use the apartment Wi-Fi once you arrive.
  5. Message your host when you land so check-in can be timed well.

What to tell the driver

Drivers know the city well, but street names can be hard to catch. Show the written address and, if you have it, a pin on a map. Say the building or complex name clearly. If the driver seems unsure, a quick call to your host usually solves it in moments.

Money and a SIM on arrival

The arrivals area has ATMs and exchange desks, but rates at airports are rarely the best. Change or withdraw only enough lek for the taxi and your first day, and handle the rest in the city. If you want mobile data immediately, a local SIM or eSIM is sold at the airport; otherwise the apartment Wi-Fi will cover you.

Luggage and late arrivals

The airport is small and easy to move through, so luggage is rarely a problem. For very late or very early flights, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is better than the bus. If your flight is delayed, message your host as early as you can, as check-in can usually be adjusted.

Going home — back to the airport

For the return trip, plan backwards from your flight. Allow time to check in, plus the 30 to 40 minute drive, plus extra for traffic if you travel in the morning or evening peak. Book your taxi or transfer the day before, and ask your host to help confirm a pick-up time so the last morning is calm rather than rushed.

Don't change all your money at the airport. Change or withdraw just enough for the taxi and the first day; rates in the city are usually better. A small amount of cash on arrival is all you really need.
