Day Trips from Tirana

One of the advantages of staying in Tirana is how much sits within easy reach. In a single day you can see a hilltop castle, a Roman city by the sea, a UNESCO-listed old town, or a mountain. This guide compares the main options so you can choose the one that fits your time, your energy and the weather.

Quick comparison

  • Krujë — about 40 min away · easy half-day · best for history and craft shopping
  • Durrës — about 40 min away · easy half or full day · best for the sea and Roman ruins
  • Berat — about 2 hours away · full day · best for old-town beauty and architecture
  • Mount Dajti — on the edge of the city · half-day · best for nature with little effort
  • Bovilla Lake — about 45 min away · half-day · best for scenery and a short hike

Krujë — castle and old bazaar

Krujë sits on a hillside about 40 minutes from Tirana. Its castle is tied to Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, and inside the walls are a museum and wide views over the plain below. Just beneath the castle, a restored old bazaar sells crafts, antiques and textiles, and it is the best souvenir shopping in the country. It is an easy trip, manageable in half a day, and good if you want history without a long journey.

Durrës — coast and Roman history

Durrës is Albania's main port and one of its oldest cities, around 40 minutes from Tirana. It has a long sandy beach and, in the centre, a large Roman amphitheatre you can walk around. It works as a half-day for the history alone, or a full day if you want beach time as well. Best saved for warm, clear weather, and busier in the summer holiday season.

Berat — the city of a thousand windows

Berat is the most striking of these trips, but also the furthest, roughly two hours each way. A UNESCO-listed town, it is known for white Ottoman houses stacked up the hillside and a castle quarter that is still lived in today. There are churches, a small museum and quiet old streets to wander. It deserves a full day and an early start, and you should not try to combine it with anything else.

Mount Dajti — nature without the distance

For the easiest escape, Mount Dajti rises right behind the city. The Dajti Express cable car carries you up in about 15 minutes to cooler air, pine woods, short walking trails and wide views over Tirana. It needs only half a day, suits families and anyone short on time, and is best on a clear day when the views are open.

Bovilla Lake — scenery and a short walk

Bovilla is a reservoir in the hills about 45 minutes from Tirana, known for a striking viewpoint reached by a short but steep climb. It is a good half-day for those who want real scenery and a little walking, and it photographs beautifully. There is little in the way of cafés or facilities, so bring water and snacks and wear proper shoes.

Independent or with a tour?

Krujë, Durrës and Berat can all be done independently by regional bus or shared minibus, which is cheap but slower and harder to work out without local help. Organised day tours and hired taxis cost more but remove the planning and the language barrier. If your time is short, or you want to combine two places, a tour or a driver for the day is the easier choice. Your host can help you arrange transport for any of these.

What to bring

For any of these trips, bring water, sun protection, cash for entry tickets and food, and comfortable shoes, as castles and old towns mean uneven ground and steps. Start early to beat both the heat and the traffic, and check the weather, since Durrës, Dajti and Bovilla are far better on a clear day.

Pick day trips by weather and mood, not a checklist. Save Durrës and Bovilla for clear days, keep Berat for a full, well-rested day, and use Krujë or Dajti when you only have a morning or the forecast is uncertain.
